After modeling the wheel, HED made numerous prototypes and spent a full 10 days in the wind tunnel to test and perfect it, and came out the other side with a brand new rim profile. The result is pure SPEED. But what is speed on a bike? Well, HED and The Cycling House both know it's not just low drag. Tire efficiency, cornering speed, handling, strength, stiffness, and even comfort are important factors for overall speed. All are addressed in the 2012 Stinger 6. Your wheels have to take you across the finish in order to win. They have to be strong and durable. The 2008 model stingers performed without failure on the brutal cobbles of Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders. The 2012 Stingers are 20% stiffer laterally and 16% more impact resistant, thanks to a layup with 3 separate carbon cloths and a very specific lay-up that carefully controls variable wall thicknesses and fiber orientation. These wheels are almost bulletproof. Stinger wheels can also be easily maintained. The 2011 Stinger 6 is laced using external nipples and industry-leading standard Sapim CX-Ray spoke. This means the wheels can be trued without having to re-glue the tire. An obvious added plus for anyone who intends to race these wheel on a cross course or put them through the ringer at a grand fondo. For 2012, Stinger rear wheels use 2x spoke lacing on the non-drive side to stiffen the wheel over last previous models. All the 2012 Stinger wheels are Flamme Rouge (FR) as well. The FR Sonic hubs use only the best ABEC.5 bearings so they roll and roll and roll. A grease port is placed in the rear hub body, making it a cakewalk to repack your bearings with fresh grease- keeping them smooth and increasing bearing life. The rear Sonic FR hub uses a titanium ratchet ring to reduce weight. Stinger wheels are all tuned with our SCT Technology. This means the wheel is tuned for handling according to its depth. This way, in a cross wind the wheels are solid and aero performance isnt compromised. The 2008 introduction of the C2 platform was a dramatic improvement over HEDs previous designs: aero drag was reduced substantially, and the use of wider tires dramatically improved cornering. Since the introduction of the C2 platform, HED has spent three full years developing SCT, their proprietary rim profile tuning process. Each rim depth is shaped for lowest aero drag and fine-tuned to maximize stability in crosswinds.
